Sal is one of the most important places Loggerhead turtles come to nest and lay their eggs. Please note that this tour may not be suitable for small children as you are required to be still and quiet when turtles are on the beach so they don’t get disturbed.

Turtles

The Cape Verde islands are an important nesting ground for leatherback turtles. These turtles come ashore on many of Sal’s beaches to lay eggs. There is a Turtle Conservation Area close to the Riu Garopa hotel and you may be allowed to see some baby turtles on the beach with a guide. Alternatively, you can visit the turtle hatchery further up the coast.
